Circular IT

Circular IT

During the UN Climate Accord in Paris, it was agreed that in 2030 we will have 49% less CO2 emissions worldwide compared to 1990. In 2050, 95% less CO2 emissions than in 1990 must be realised. This, of course, with the main objective of combating global warming.

IT is placing an increasing burden on our energy supply. Researchers estimate that the percentage of global greenhouse gas emissions will be between 6 and 14 percent by 2040. As part of the Climate Agreement, the Dutch IT sector has therefore expressed its ambition to be climate-neutral by 2030. But according to a Research by ABN AMRO among 588 IT decision-makers, only 35% of all IT decision-makers include sustainability as a procurement criterion.

A significant part of the environmental impact of IT hardware is in the extraction and production of raw materials. As much as 83% of the CO2 emissions of a smartphone, lies in the beginning of its lifecycle: the production. It is therefore logical that the use of refurbished hardware makes a huge contribution to reducing global CO2 emissions. You also prevent unnecessary waste of raw materials.

What do we do when we refurbish equipment?

And this is where circular IT and refurbished IT hardware products come in. For those who don't know, refurbished hardware is short-used IT equipment. Think of iPhones and iPads, laptops, but also networking equipment like servers, switches and firewalls. This equipment has been cleaned thoroughly inside and out. All data on the device is (possibly certified) erased. The software is reinstalled, up to the latest version. The product is fully checked for any defects and repaired where necessary. What cannot be repaired will be replaced. Batteries are also replaced when they no longer meet the standard (80-85% of the maximum battery capacity, depending on the provider).

Advantages of circular IT

Reasons for a company to opt for circular IT and therefore refurbished IT hardware are:

- Environmentally friendly

- Cheaper

Refurbished hardware is up to 85% cheaper than new hardware.

- Compatibility with the rest of the network.

A company has often chosen a particular product line for its IT infrastructure. If something breaks down, or if the organisation grows, it is often wise to choose the same standard. Because the newer hardware is not always compatible with the rest of the network (think of docking stations). It is also easier to sell internally, because then employees do not have to wonder why one colleague gets a new laptop or smartphone and the other one does not.

- Immediately available.

No long waiting times due to a chip shortage in the market, but deliverable from our own stock. Maxicom has a warehouse of 5.000 m2, so we can always deliver a lot of IT hardware from stock.

- Good conditions.

For example, you get a standard one-year warranty on refurbished products, but this can often be extended to two or three years on request. This is usually better than what you get from the manufacturer.

- Take-back of old equipment.

The party where you buy your refurbished products will also take back your old hardware. Several things can happen to it. If there is still demand for it, it will be refurbished and sold to yet another happy customer. If it is no longer popular in the Dutch market, it will be sold to other countries or recycled. Some refurbished products allow you to choose to donate all or part of the profit to charity.
